Beginner's Guide to Siege: Game Modes and Match Types

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is a popular, team-based competitive FPS game. As well as having a large player base, it has a reasonably large professional scene and a good number of streamers so there is plenty of content available to watch, from professional players, casters and analysts and content creators. I have found that watching other people play has helped me to get to know the maps better, learn positions to hold the sites and generally find out about small things I wouldn’t have otherwise known. I will write a post about some of the streamers I enjoy watching and some that I think would be good for beginner or intermediate players. For now however, I am focussing on putting together an in depth but concise guide to Siege for beginners. The aim of this guide is to be an easy to read guide for people who are pretty much completely new to the game. Not everything in here will be useful for everyone, however I would recommend everyone looks over the operator guides as they give a good amount of detail about each operator in a concise manner. This guide will be mainly aimed at PC players, but the majority of it should be applicable to console players as well.

I originally had the idea of writing this guide because a friend of mine bought the game. The plan was that some friends and myself would teach her the game, however she is spending the year on the other side of the world in a completely different time zone. Therefore I realised a written guide would be more useful for her. Hopefully these posts will also prove useful for other people who are new to the game. This first post will cover the game modes and match types and the next couple will cover the different available operators.

Game Modes

Bomb

The only game mode in Newcomer, Ranked and Unranked. There are two sites which each contain a bomb. The aim of the attackers is to either kill all the defenders or to plant the defuser in one of the two rooms. Planting takes 7 seconds and triggers a 45 second timer until the attackers win. This 45 seconds is commonly referred to as the "post plant". In order to win in this period the defenders need to destroy the defuser. This also takes 7 seconds, effectively giving the defenders 38 seconds to begin disabling the defuser. When defending, it is important to remember that you should not reinforce between the 2 points. Instead you want to make a rotation hole in that wall using either a shotgun or impact grenades, you don’t need to do this if there is already a door between the two points.

Hostage

In order to win a hostage round, the attackers need to either kill all the defenders or escort the hostage outside of the building to an extraction zone which will be marked by a red flare. There will be multiple extraction zones outside the building so you should be able to find one easily. While escorting the hostage, the attacker will only have access to their secondary weapon. If the round ends with the hostage in the possession of the attackers then the round will continue until the hostage is dropped or the attackers free them.

The hostage can take a few hits, however they can be downed and killed. If the hostage is downed then the team who downed them will need to revive them in the same way you would revive a teammate. If one team kills the hostage then they lose the round. If the round ends with the hostage down then the team who downed the hostage will lose, even if they are in the process of reviving them.

Secure Area

In Secure Area, the aim of the attackers is to either kill all the defenders or to secure the area by being on the point with no defenders for 10 seconds. If an attacker is securing and a defender enters the room then the securing timer will be paused until the defender leaves or is killed. The objective room will be a single room containing the Biohazard container. Importantly, you will continue to secure even if you are down so long as no defenders are in the room.

Match Types

Newcomer - 4 minutes

This mode is only for people level 50 and below. It is designed purely for new players to get used to the game. It uses a restricted map pool of only 3 maps: Consulate, Bank and Chalet, in order to not overwhelm new players with the full map pool and the only available game mode is Bomb.

Each round is 4 minutes long, and a team needs to win 3 rounds in order to win. If after 4 rounds the teams are tied on 2 rounds each, then a final overtime round will be played and the winner of this round will win the match.

Quick Match - 3 minutes 30 seconds

Quick matches are made up of 4 rounds, with a 5th Overtime round if the teams are tied at 2 rounds each by the end of the 4th round. The first team to win three rounds will win the match. The teams will switch attack and defense roles after the 2nd round. All three game modes (bomb, hostage and secure area) are available in quick matches and you can choose which modes you play through “Matchmaking Settings” in the main menu settings. Unlike in Ranked and Unranked, you cannot choose which site you defend on, it is randomly chosen.

Ranked - 3 minutes

Ranked is the most competitive match type for Siege. As the name suggests, this mode is how you gain a rank, which is often used by players as a metric for how good they are. In order to partake in Ranked matches, you are required to have a clearance level of 50. In order to win a Ranked game, you need to win at least 4 rounds. In normal time you will do 3 rounds of either attack or defense and then swap onto the other side. If both teams win 3 rounds then overtime will begin and it will be first to 5, alternating each round on attack and defense. In Ranked, the defenders can choose which site they defend. Once they win a site, they cannot return to it as it will be locked. Overtime resets the sites which have been previously locked.

Banning System

The banning system is unique to the Ranked and Unranked game modes. There are two ban phases before the match begins. The first is the Map Ban phase. In this phase, 3 maps will be offered and each team will be able to vote to ban a map, meaning it won’t be played. Whichever map gets the most votes each team will be banned. You won’t know which map the opposition has banned until after both teams have chosen. If each team bans a different map then the remaining map will be the one played, however it is possible for both teams to ban the same map, in which case the map will be randomly selected out of the two remaining maps. It currently appears that in this case, the leftmost map remaining will always be chosen (as of 06/10/2020 this appears to have been fixed and is no longer true). The second phase is the Operator Ban phase. In this phase each team will have the opportunity to ban two operators, one attacker and one defender. The defending team bans the first attacker then the attacking team will ban the second, then attackers ban the first defender, and defenders ban the second.

Ranks

The order of the ranks goes Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Champion. Within Copper, Bronze and Silver, there are five tiers, going from five and progressing up to one. In Gold and Platinum there are only three tiers, going from three to one. In Diamond and Champion there are no tiers.

Abandon Penalty

In Ranked, if you leave the match before it has finished and don’t rejoin, you will suffer an Abandon Penalty. This will unfortunately happen no matter why you left a match, including game crashes and server issues. The Abandon Penalty will prevent you from playing Ranked and Unranked matches and reduce your renown gain by 50% for the suspension period.

Match Cancellation

If you load into a match where you have fewer players than the opposition, or if someone leaves before the match begins, you will have the option to cancel the match. The cancel option will become available in the prep phase and if a majority of the team vote to cancel then the match will be cancelled. It is important you don’t leave the match until the game has been cancelled or the usual Abandon Penalty will apply. The cancelled match will have no effect on your rank/MMR.

Map Pool

Ranked has a restricted available map pool. The current maps available are:

  • Bank
  • Border
  • Chalet
  • Coastline
  • Consulate
  • Clubhouse
  • Kafe Dostoyevsky
  • Kanal
  • Oregon
  • Outback
  • Theme Park
  • Villa

Unranked - 3 minutes

Unranked is almost identical to Ranked aside from the fact that it does not count towards your rank and you can play it from level 10. This means you can practice strategies or get used to the game mode without risking losing rank. It can also be used if you wish to play a PvP warm up for Ranked as Quick Matches can be very different to Ranked matches.

Training Grounds (Terrorist Hunt)

Training Grounds (formerly known as Terrorist Hunt) is the PvE match type. It has three difficulties and can either be played alone, in a squad or in a matchmade group of 5. This is the best way to warm up before starting to play. It is also, in my opinion, the best way to learn maps and improve your aim in game. There are different modes available:

Elimination

This is the most simple mode. There will be a set number of AI enemies in the map and your team needs to kill them. The difficulty chosen will dictate the time allocated and the number of enemies. When there are 3 left they will actively hunt down the player(s).

Defuse Bomb

Similar to the PvP Bomb mode, you will need to locate and defuse two bombs. It will take 60 seconds for the bomb to be defused, during which the AI enemies will attempt to disable the defuser. They can be disrupted from disabling using stun grenades, Ying’s Candelas or by damaging them.

Escort Hostage

Pretty much identical to the PvP version, however when you begin escorting the hostage, more terrorists will spawn and you will need to stand in the extraction zone for a few seconds before you win the round. In addition the hostage can spawn in any room. If the AI enemies kill the hostage then the player(s) lose.

Protect Hostage

Four waves of AI enemies will aim to kill you or the hostage, unlike in PvP hostage, the attackers aim is to kill the hostage, not escort them out. You have a preparation phase before each wave to reinforce and place gadgets.

Since then she has developed a particular love of the Elder Scrolls games and the Fallout series. At the moment she is playing a lot of Rainbow Six Siege and Sea of Thieves - arguably too much.
